CFE Mexican Electric Bill

Sample of Mexican CFE Electric Bill

Sample Mexican CFE Electric Bill

So you just purchased that new Rocky Point, Puerto Penasco, Mexico Condo.  And you need electricity.  CFE is the Mexico government owned electric corporation.  Electric rates are set by a government commission with the lowest rate being subsidized by the government. I’ve provided an example of a CFE Mexican Electric bill to the left.

You will be bill by the CFE Mexican Electrical company every two months.  Bills must be paid in person with pesos at the CFE office off of Bonita Juarez Blvd.  You can pay the CFE representative at the window or you can pre-pay at the ATM kiosk.  Either way CFE only accepts pesos – no U.S. or Canadian Dollars.

The CFE bills on a kWh tier system.  The lost tier of .733 pesos per kWh is subsidized by the federal government.  So if you can keep your electrical usage to a minimum – such as turning lights off during the day and use sunlight, air drying your cloths, use appliances or air conditioning sparingly you save a lot of money.

You start to incur additional expense when you move into tiers 2 at 1.229 and tier 3 at 2.993 per kWh.  The bill to your left is an actual bill issued in Feb. My total cost was 1,356 Pesos. In dollars, at the time, it works out to $120 US dollars. Not bad.

You will have 5 days to pay your bill.  After 5 days expect CFE to terminate your service.  They do charge a reconnect fee.

So remember to use electricity in Mexico wisely, as the cost can add up quickly.

Drive Safely in Mexico – what to do in an emergency while driving.

Mexico does have several emergency resources available to tourist driving in Mexico.  When driving in Mexico keep the following number handy for emergency

How the emergency number works in Mexico:

Dial 066 on your cell phone – it will ring in Nogales where you will be transferred to an English speaking person if needed. The Mexican emergency center can can locate you using GPS on your phone if enabled.

What to do in a road side emergency while traveling MexicoDial 9-1-800-903-0092 for the Green Angles.  The Mexican Green Angles provide road side assistants to Motorists traveling throughout the country.  You fee their green and white pickup truck often on the side of the road waiting for a call or assisting tourist with car trouble.

Mexican Red Cross – each community has a local Red Cross organization.  You will often see red cross workers asking for donations on city or rural roads setting up temporary road stops.  You don’t have to give, but remember they will usually be first responders when you need them the most, so consider giving.
